how to make a tote bag into smn else

what you’ll do:

1. locate an old tote bag. cut off the back section so that you are only left with the front half.

2. roll from the edge of the fabric into the center, folding in on itself, to create a thicker line of fabric that will provide a sort of soft boning. this line can follow a variety of lines—i like mine coming into a V shape with a flat bottom, like a mountain plateau but upside down: \_/.

3. pin down the rolled fabric so that it stays in place while you sew.

4. add 3 large O-rings to the flat part of the V (represented by the underscores in between the two slashes. add two large O-rings a few inches beneath the tote handle. these will eventually be connected by your chain.

5. sew all the way along the pinned sides.

6. put the tote handle over your neck with the existing half of the tote in the front of your body, ideally with the opening ending right below the chest. thread the ribbon through the two O-rings underneath the tote handle and tie it to get a feel for how long the chain should be. with the ribbon in place, measure out how long other chains that will go along the back should be by draping it across the back and to each side of the tote. when you do this, you can choose where you want each chain to lie across on the back. make a note of the heights of the chains and where they will originate on the tote by marking with a pencil.

7. open up the remaining large O-rings and poke them through the fabric into the pencil marks made in step 6. close them once in place.

8. knowing estimated lengths of the chains that go across the back, separate the roll of chain using pliers and opening up each piece away from each other on the y-axis. once the pieces of chain are separated, connect them to the large O-rings.

9. open up each chain in its center. open up a small O-ring to add a clasp. close the O-ring on the chain.

10. get your decoration/charms (i used star-shaped colored foils with a slit going toward a hole) on the clasps by pushing the slit through the smallest part of the clasp.

11. lay your object down. put all of the chains toward the outside so that they don’t interfere with the tote. connect your metal clip to the O-ring at the bottom-center of your tote and to the center chain link in the top-most chain.

12. lift up the above metalwork and put your string of lights between the chain and the body of the tote. the tote can be grabbed by this chainwork and handle, and can be hung up in this position.

13. Hammer your nail into the wall where you want your LAMP to hang. Pick up your lamp and hang it on the wall!

14. Take the tote and hang the handle over a hanger in whatever way looks best to you. then, take the large O-rings at the corners of the \_/ and put them around the top, metal piece of the hanger. hang each hanger up, slightly separated, on any higher-hanging structure: a lamp, a countertop, a window sill… Watch the stars and chains hang down for your ADULT MOBILE.

15. Take the tote’s handle over your head with the body of the tote over your stomach and below your chest. Fasten the clasps in the back so that the chains drape off of your back to fasten on your CORSET. Some chains can go in the front of hang down based on your style!

smn else = corset, hanging lamp, adult mobile
